The PAYM models as a youth organisation that aims to integrate fresh and new initiatives to meet the needs of schools. With the multi-faceted approach to proactively reach out to the youths in schools by tapping on the varying interests of students, the PAYM and Ministry of Education (MOE) formed a new Co-Curricular Activity (CCA) and enrichment programme with a local community focus, the Service-Learning Club (SLC), in secondary schools in 2006.
The PAYM SLC aims to provide a holistic development in youths and to inculcate resilience, discipline and a spirit of service to others. It hopes to
- build and mould students’ leadership abilities, strengthen character development and interpersonal skills;
- broaden the students’ perspectives and understanding of diverse cultures and customs within the community;
- promote civic responsibility among the students; and
- generate students’ enthusiasm and commitment towards the school and the community.
Members of the SLC will be able to spearhead a wider variety of projects for the community by tapping not only on their own talents and initiatives, but also on other resources available, such as through the grassroots organisations (GROs). These SLCs will be linked to the Community Club/Centre (CC) Youth Executive Committee (YECs) under the umbrella of the PAYM. Members of the CC YECs will be mentors to the SLC members and will guide and help them in implementing community-based events.
